Our Art Director, Roberto Giacomucci, tells us about his experience alongside Kubedesign.
Why choose cardboard as the primary material for your creations?
Cardboard is commonly associated with the world of packaging, it is considered a poor, disposable element, but it is so much more. It is a precious material just like wood and metal, an easy-to-model material, versatile and with a very low environmental impact. I chose the cardboard to raise awareness of its great potentiality end to emphasize its inherent characteristics
Where does the XXL /XXL Light concept come from?
The concept behind the XXL and XXLight is to change the everyday relationship we have with objects all around us. Oversized objects regarding their usual dimensions that acquire new functions and create new perspectives. They are, above all, iconic objects bound to our history. It’s the evolution of a continuous research that tends to surprise, shock and amaze.
As of today, which has been the element that has given you the biggest satisfaction?
As of today, the project I have been most passionate about has been ‘Piega’. Being able to face the folding chair project by using cardboard, a material usually considered weak, rendering it resistant, practical and functional has been greatly rewarding.
As evidence of the validity of this project, in 2011, ‘Piega’ won the Good Design award.
What projects would you like to develop in the near future alongside Kubedesign?
In the near future I would like to continue with the path I’ve taken alongside Kubedesign, which is to look for a way to make cardboard even more precious, creating a series of noble and elegant objects by using the ‘layering’ technology so that they can be sold in ‘antique’ shops.
